From Rescue to Running Free: Meet Amelie

At Camp Run-A-Mutt, we love every dog who walks through our doors. The bouncy ones, the shy ones, the ones who take three visits to warm up and the ones who act like they’ve owned the place since day one. Every dog is welcome here, and every dog matters.

But there’s something that happens when you meet a dog who was given a second chance — a dog who came from hard circumstances and found their way into a life full of love. Something that stops you for a moment and reminds you why all of this matters.

That’s why we wanted to share Amelie’s story.

A Rough Start

Amelie is a five-year-old Weimaraner who came into this world without much luck on her side. Before finding her forever family, she spent her days confined — caged for up to 16 hours at a time — and was subjected to abuse that no animal should ever endure. Thankfully, the Weimaraner Rescue of Texas stepped in and gave her the lifeline she deserved. She was just six months old.

It’s hard to imagine looking at Amelie today.

The Right Family Found Her

Her family already had Weimaraners and knew the breed well — the energy, the personality, the sheer amount of exercise a Weim needs to be happy. When they let the Weimaraner Rescue of Texas know they were looking for a puppy, the rescue knew right away they’d be a great fit for Amelie. It didn’t take long to see why.

From the moment she joined her new family, Amelie’s world transformed. She sleeps in her mom’s bed. She gets bones and peanut butter. She goes on walks and vacations to her grandparents’ ranch in Texas, where she runs free with the other Weims — doing exactly what Weimaraners were born to do. She is never in a cage. Not ever.

Her family doesn’t just love her — they spoil her rotten, and honestly, she’s earned every bit of it.

Her Home Away from Home

Amelie has been coming to Camp Run-A-Mutt Houston Galleria since October 2022, and if you know anything about Weimaraners, you won’t be surprised to hear she was practically a daily regular. (Have you ever met a Weim? They need a lot of exercise — it’s basically a full-time job.) These days she comes a few times a week, which suits her just fine.

At camp, she goes by “Omelette” and her godmother Tosha, one of the staff members at Houston Galleria, says she makes her enthusiasm for school very clear. The moment she arrives, she’s ready to go. She won’t head back until mom has left the building — no lingering in the doorway, no long goodbyes with the teacher, thank you very much. She’s got places to be and friends to see.

She also has a reputation for giving all the boy dogs kisses. A total flirt, apparently.

Her best friend at camp is Athena, a fellow camper she adores. That kind of bond — between a dog, the people who care for her, and the community around her — is exactly what Camp Run-A-Mutt is built on. Mom puts it perfectly: “She’s the funniest dog we have ever had.”

Why We Share Stories Like This

We didn’t feature Amelie’s story to make a point. We featured it because it’s beautiful, and because the people who adopted her deserve to be celebrated just as much as she does.

Rescue doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s just a family saying yes to a dog who needed them — and then spending every day making sure she knows she’s safe. That she’s loved. That this is home.
