Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness Month: Why We Believe There’s No Such Thing as a Bad Dog

October is Pit Bull Awareness Month, a time to celebrate one of the most loyal, loving, and misunderstood groups of dogs — the “bully breeds.” At Camp Run-A-Mutt, we know firsthand that these dogs have just as much love, loyalty, and playfulness to give as any other breed. Sadly, bully breeds like Pit Bulls, American Bulldogs, Boxers, and Staffordshire Terriers have long faced unfair stereotypes shaped by misconceptions rather than truth. They’re often mislabeled as unpredictable or aggressive, when in reality, these dogs are typically affectionate, eager-to-please, and deeply bonded to their families.

How Bully Breeds Got a Bad Reputation

Pit Bulls and other bully breeds were originally bred in the 19th century. They were known for their strength, courage, and loyalty — traits that led to them becoming dependable working dogs and beloved family companions. They were even featured in early American advertising as symbols of bravery and trustworthiness.

Unfortunately, as time went on, some people began exploiting these loyal dogs for illegal fighting rings and intimidation. Media coverage often focused on these tragic situations, creating fear and bias toward the breed as a whole. Instead of blaming irresponsible ownership and mistreatment, the blame unfairly fell on the dogs themselves — a reputation they’ve struggled to shake ever since.

There’s No Such Thing as a Bad Dog

At Camp Run-A-Mutt, we believe that adog’s behavior is shaped by their environment, training, and care — not their breed. That’s why we proudly have no breed restrictions at any of our locations. Every single dog, whether a Pit Bull, Chihuahua, or Great Dane, is given an equal opportunity to join our pack.

Before any pup joins the fun, they go through an individual temperament test — a one-on-one assessment that helps us understand their personality, comfort level, and play style. This approach ensures that every dog is a good fit for our cage-free, social environment, and that their time at camp is safe, happy, and positive.

Over the years, we’ve met countless bully breeds who’ve completely stolen our hearts. They prove, time and again, that love and good leadership bring out the best in every dog. They’re the goofy cuddlers, the energetic playmates, the loyal best friends — and they remind us daily why we believe in giving every dog a fair chance to show who they truly are.

This month, and every month, we celebrate Pit Bulls and all bully breeds for the incredible companions they are. They deserve love, understanding, and the opportunity to be judged by their hearts, not their headlines.
